Works fine on official servers and on sp for me. In fact just went and double checked and all is working as intended. The top way to harvest more bark is to craft yourself a nicer pick. Any tier pick can pull bark, but higher tiers pull more bark. For example, a stone pick harvests 2 bark per swing while an obsidian pick harvests around 5 bark per swing. You can still swing at the same trees, you'll just get more bark per tree.
